Good afternoon,
Unfortunately on the advice of the physician for the district we will be dismissing school early tomorrow (August 29th) afternoon. The high school will be dismissing at 11:00. The middle school will be dismissing at noon. Both elementary schools will be dismissing at 1:00 pm. All students will be offered lunch. The orientation sessions for Kindergarten and Pre-Kindergarten will occur as scheduled. The recommendation from Dr. Coleman, the district physician, is based on the fact that the school buildings are currently retaining a great deal of heat from the summer. So unlike heat waves which occur in May and June, the residual heat trapped from the summer months makes the situation even more concerning for the welfare of students.
As the forecast for Thursday is for temperatures in the 80’s and rain, we have no expectation of needing to dismiss early again on Thursday. However, we will monitor the conditions of the rooms very carefully. All of the schools, with exception of Swallow Union, have areas of the building which have a/c should some students need a respite from Thursday’s temperatures.
While extended day will be open until 4:00 there are very limited areas which are used for this program that are air-conditioned on the Main Street campus and there is no area that is used at Swallow Union for extended-day that is air-conditioned. Therefore parents are strongly urged to make alternative arrangements for their students who utilize the extended day program.
I thank you in advance for your cooperation in this matter.
Best regards,
Laura Chesson, Superintendent
